MOTM '16 Promo
Ink’s Middle of the Map Fest annually curates and cultivates the unique arts and creative culture of the Midwest, bringing together a sense of community in local and national talent in an annual festival featuring music, forum and film.
The Middle of the Map team first approached us in September 2015 about producing all of the video content for the upcoming festival. The first task was to create a lineup announcement promo. In our first meeting we discussed concepts for this video. They had the rough idea of yearbook photos for bands. We loved this concept but started to work out the issues with them. We discussed that we would have 100+ bands to list and probably only four to seven local bands able to make it on set for the shoot. We would need many different scenes to support the amount of names that we had to list.
In the end we landed on an entire school scene in a Wes Anderson fashion. Known for his use of carefully art directed scenes, one-point perspective shots, simple camera movements, and his lavish use of Futura Bold titles, we felt that this was the perfect medium in which to relay our message. We began to work on a storyboard, scout locations, and cast our talent.
The first task was casting our photographer. It was the most obvious choice for us. We selected collaborator and composer Sam Billen of Primary Color Music. We knew that he would have the right look and styling. He jumped right into his role on the day of the shoot and never looked back. The rest of our talent were amazing. Working carefully to style them with collected & curated vintage pieces, each character assumed their role and were easy to work with. Each band was given a distinct look. School locations were shot over the course of three days in three different schools and tied together to appear as one seamless location. We had a lot of fun creating this piece. It was quite the undertaking but was easily one of the most enjoyable editing experiences. Seeing the shots unfold and work to create a world quite similar to a Wes Anderson film.
